Burton European Open 2012

My fizog from the iphone lense of the-goodlife.co.uk

Last Thursday me and my dad went over to Laax for the BEO, when we got there we met Katie Ormerod and her dad Mark Ormerod. The next day was practice day and the first time I had seen the course and it was, a down rail or up rail into two small jumps that were really close to each other there was only a 2 metre gap between the first landing and the take off for the next jump. After the two small jumps there is another two bigger jumps and then at the end there is the Creative Use Of Space feature which was a wallride into a drop or a pole tap. Or on the other side a close out rail into a stair set with a down bar or a down flat down. On the practice day the weather was perfect bluebird and warm so the course got slow and slushy nearer the end of the day, I got the run I wanted to do during practice just before it started to get slushy which I was happy about. Also on the same day when it got slushy I decided to try some front 9’s which I have never done before and I landed quite a few of them so I was stoked!!!

My Qualification score and rank

The next day was qualification and finals day for boys and girls so a lot was happening that day. I was in heat 1 and dropped second to last which was quite a good position to drop, In my first run I did 50-50 back 1 off into cab 5 mute to back 3 tail into back 7 mute into front 7 melon then into 50-50 front 3 on the close out to back lip on the down rail, but I fell on the front 7 because I went to big. On my second run I did the same and landed the front 7 which put me second in my heat which got me through to the final in 2nd place for my heatand 4th place overall from both heats which was pretty good.

In the final I did the same run for my first and second runs, just tried to improve the run on the second attempt and then went for the front 9 on the thirid run but put my hand down which I was a bit gutted about but it is a new trick so I need to work on it a bit more. In the end I came 9th which is pretty good at the BEO to be in the top 10 so I was stoked!!!

Squeek "Murder Face"

Also Katie came 3rd in the girls slopestyle and 2nd the day after in halfpipe so a massive well done to her. Today Jamie Nicholls qualified for finals with a sick run and then on his second run did an amazing scorpion not when landing on a jump but just doing a speed check after the first rail but still well done for qualifying Jamie! I am back in Mayrhofen now and there are some fun comps coming up like the Volcom Peanut Butter Rail Jam and the world longest rail attempt at Gerlos which will be good fun!!!

Heres a couple more pics from Jon Weaver (thanks Jon) and my dad.

Brits Slopestyle!

On Friday it was the Protest Slopestyle which was a great day ! The course was a down bar, stall rail, down bar then a flat down box into 3 big kickers. On my first run I got all my rail tricks but then I bailed on the first big jump which I was a bit gutted about, but then I landed my 2nd run which was front board, frontside 50-50, back lip, gap noseslide, back 3, method and then a back 7 so I was stoked to land my run!

After that it was the mens qualifiers which was great to watch. They announced the 12 finalists and I qualified in 10th! We were only allowed 1 practice run which was rubbish because it had got cold and the jumps were slushy ice, it sucked. I didn’t want to do it because I knuckled the first jump and hurt my knee on the practice run but I did my first run anyway and landed it bolts so I was really really happy! We went to the bottom (in the lift cause my knee hurt so much) and got packed and then went to prize giving and I came 1st in my category and then I found out I came 5th overall I was so stoked!

We set off back to Mayrhofen with James Thorne and Chris Kightley and on the way the car broke so we had to go back to Laax which was rubbish, but we eventually got back to the Hoff. We went out to the Wald Cafe for a celebratory Schnitzel and its feeling good to be back home for some rest and to see my dog ! Great times in Laax, so stoked to see all my mates and meet a couple of my sponsors 🙂

Brits Big Air!

The Big Air jump!

So I arrived in Laax on Sunday with my dad and James Thorne. On Monday it was the practice day so I went and practiced slopestyle and then moved over to big air. The next day I went and practiced slopestyle again and got back 3, back 3, back 7 then I moved over to big air and did some back 7’s on the jump also I did some photos with Giro which was good fun. Then today it was the Giro big air we got an hour of practice on the jump so I did some more back 7’s and tried some back 9’s but didn’t land any. Then in the comp I landed a back 7 and then went for a back 9 on my second run and just under rotated it but I was still stoked to land it. After the comp I went riding with Matt McMormick just doing the rail line to the bottom which was sick. Then we watched the mens and it was sick one guy did a triple backflip and nearly landed it CRAZY!!! Then at the bottom prize giving went on and Chris McMormick won his catergory and I came 2nd in my catergory and Matt came 3rd also Sam Turnbull came 3rd overall and Chris Kightley came 2nd overall so well done everyone it was a fun day!

HOME :)

I had a good flight home slept most of the way home so I might not have bad jetlag but we will see. Also unfortunately my transfer flight to Munich is cancelled so I can’t get to Munich until Thursday which sucks but I will be home before christmas which is good. I have had a good time out in Breck it was fun riding some powder and some good jumps and rails but I am glad to be going home because I am so far away from everyone and everything which sucks but it was a fun trip all together. Can’t wait to get home now and go shredding in Mayrhofen with Jordan Gee and everyone else. Then after that go other to Laax for the BEO which will be fun to ride in again 🙂

Here is a little edit from the rail in the garden 🙂

And here is my little bro Archie doing his 1st run of the season with my dad 🙂

Animal Videocasts

Couple of videocasts from Animal have just come out, both done by Johno Verity, both are brilliant and they both feature me (and some of the other Animal team) 🙂

Check em out below (and the tiny blue jacket was a sample I had to wear for some photos !!! It’s not one I will be wearing again unless I get a bigger one !!!) 🙂

Brits 2010

DSC_0132.jpgSo whilst we where in Laax I competed in The Brits which was fun. We went out a week before to practice for it, whilst we where out there one of the pipe walls was cut down so I couldn’t practice pipe for a few days 🙁

First day we got our bearings back and we went to slopestyle and I got used to the kickers again then I decided to spin of the last kicker and it felt really good. Then Hamish Mcknight told me to spin of all three so I did and that was a good start to the week ! It started snowing on Monday and snowed all through the night and all day Tuesday. The next day was an amazing powder day with knee deep powder through the trees and doing some drops as well. For the rest of the week I just practised everything (during the week my mum arrived with my new board, a 2011 Stepchild Simon Chabelin which i totally love, big thanks to TSA and stepchild for sorting it so quick for me).

Monday was practise day on everything and I met Danny, Matt, Chris and Gerry Mcormick so I rode with Matt for the rest of the day which was fun, also we met the guys from Giro and have hooked me up with a helmet sponsorship ! In the evening I went to the animal house for tea (nice cooking Sonia!) and did a sticker job on my new helmet and new board. Sonia Shaw helped with my helmet and Dom Harrington helped with my board.

Tuesday was the Trespass Boardercross which was fun but I didn’t do very well in it because I fell in the semi-finals but I still enjoyed it. Then I went and practised big air and Johno Verity was filming it all, after that I rode down with Johno before we rode down he put a head cam on me and I did some drops with it on, cant wait to see the footage !

Wednesday was the Giro big air which was good to watch and compete in, the wind was quite strong but I’m used to it from Halifax. I hit the medium kicker which was still pretty big, in the comp I did back 3 and then on the second run I did back 3 mute and held the grab all the way around. After that I watched the mens big air qualifying and final which sick. Billy Morgan and Jamie Nicholls both did double cork 10’s and Sam Turnbull did well as well he did a corked back 9 and won his category. In the big air I came 2nd and Matt Mcormick came 3rd. I am stoked about getting 2nd at my first Brits.

Thursday was the Sno!Zone halfpipe which was good the pipe got a bit slushy so it was hard to get speed but i got my 5’s and 3’s in it I didn’t do very well in it but it was still fun. The mens was also good to watch Dom’s run was sick he qualified in 1st place. In the mens final Jamie (who says he doesn’t ride pipe) came 1st and he just did a back 9 from nowhere Dom came 2nd and Sam Cullum came 3rd. Also Dan Wakeham was there and he just did crippler to Mctwist all the way down the pipe as a joke and still qualified.

Friday was the last event and it was the Animal slopestyle event but it turned out to be a rail jam instead because the weather got really bad and really windy. It was still fun though I did a front board on the box and Jamie said it was the best slide of the day on it which i’m pretty pleased about. My first run was best I did front board to 50-50 board slide down on the up box then 50-50 on the step down box then stalled on the wallride. I fell on my second run which I’m a bit gutted about because if I landed I would of scored loads more than the first run. Dom did a sick double hand plant on the wall ride which look cool as well. At prize giving I came 1st which I’m super stoked about and I won a £300 K2 snowboard and I gave it to my dad.

On Saturday I went and rode some powder with Jordan Gee and Gregor Samuels. We found some little wind lips and I tried some front flips on them but I didn’t land any but Jordan landed under flips and switch front flips which is sick. Then after that it was the Red Bull Home Run which was really fun. On the way down people were slamming everywhere you looked which was funny but one guy went to hospital. Then on Sunday we drove back to Rotterdam and got the ferry home.

Now I’m back home, it really sucks because there is no snow and it’s just boring, I’ve been to the dome a couple of times and its nice to see all of my mates there, we made a little shredit to celebrate getting home 🙂

Below is a little video of Big Air day at The Brits and also the shredit from my first night back in the dome, I’ve got some amazing pics also from The Brits, will put them up later once we’ve been through them all 🙂

1st ever European Winter X Games !!!

I got through the quicksilver radar to w atch the so a massive   to everyone who voted!!! So we got a late ferry to Rotterdam which was ok then we drove from there to Tignes. when we got there we met Guilhem who is the guy who runs the Radar comp, but he didn’t have the key to the apartment so we had to sleep at his house. Then in the morning we packed the car again and drove to our apartment. It took us an hour to find the apartment because we didn’t have the right key 🙁 We got up the mountain and got our bearings again. We met my uncle Nigel and and Jason Rickwood. We then got to go and meet the pro quicksilver riders: Torah Bright, Travis Rice, Hampuss Mossesson and loads more, whilst we were chilling with the pros my board got stolen …. gutted, luckily we had my old dryslope board in the car so we had to buy some new bindings and use that board which sucked.

The next day was comp day we rode the Tignes park in the morning which was a good park it was also really long so it was fun we did some filming in that park and then went to the quicksilver tent for lunch and to watch the mens slopestyle final. Then we  went to the quicksilver park and practised on the kicker for the comp which was fun during the comp we got towed up on a ski doo which was so fun 🙂 After that we went to the X Games tent and got our prizes.

The next day we rode the Tignes park again with all the kids from the comp which was good fun we got some filming done as well with a Spanish kid called Bing Voorhem. We rode that all day which was good fun they opened the big kickers which were about 8ft gap or something like that. Also whiles filming my Dad lost his phone for about 2 hours he then rang it and it was the Norwegian kid who was staying in our room who had found it so he was lucky 🙂 Then in the evening we went to Torah Bright’s Olympic party put on by Quicksilver for winning gold which was fun.

I’m now in Laax for The Brits, been here a week and its been pretty cool riding the big slopestyle kickers 🙂 Its a bit slushy now so fingers crossed for some snow !

Here’s the video we made in the Tignes park and also the quicksilver video (check me out with Travis Rice!!):)

And here is the quicksliver video from the event, check me out chilling with Travis Rice !!!
